During January and February, Stephen Haupt (scout from 1st Durbanville) ran a community service project as part of his journey to achieve the Springbok Scout Top Award.
Stephen decided to help the Valley Primary School as he believes the school was in desperate need of assistance. The school has children from preschool age to Grade 6 level. Stephen says: “The building was in a shocking condition and was in dire need of a paint.”
Stephen lead a group of scouts from 1st Durbanville, spending 65 hours painting the school. Stephen also saw that this school did not have any sort of jungle gym or playing equipment for the children. This inspired him to build a jungle gym for the school. Says Stephen: “I really enjoyed seeing the smile that we gave to the faces of the children at Valley Primary School.”
The jungle gym was sponsored by Valda Haupt, Stephen's mother. To fund such projects, the 1st Durbanville Scout Group relies on funds received from various sources in the community, such as from our recycling bins at the Morningstar municipal dump. We also welcome donations.
